Volta's tomb

Volta's prestige was so great that he changed the name of a town?

 In what
now a hamlet of Como, Camnago Volta, we can find the mausoleum built in honour of the scientist. Commissioned by the family from the architect Melchiorre Nosetti, it was inaugurated in 1831, four years after Alessandro's death on 5 March 1827.
It is a small temple in neoclassical style and our attention is immediately captured by two
statues located at the entrance: they represent religion (on the left) praying for Volta and science (on the right) crying in despair at the death of the genius. Did you know that Napoleon can also be found inside? Yes, in the frame above the bust of the scientist from Como is immortalised the meeting that took place in 1801 in Paris, when Volta illustrated the enormous potential of the battery to the then First Consul for a good hour and a half.
