Volta high school

Is this a High school or a museum?

The building that houses the Liceo Volta has a very ancient history dating back to 1250 and it was a nunnery for centuries.

In the early nineteenth century it became a Royal Gymnasium and Alessandro Volta, who had already been nominated Regent of all the city schools, took its lead.

One of the scientist's goals was to set up the first scientific laboratory in Como.

He wrote: 'We are confidently waiting to see a physics laboratory erected here in Como too'. Today, the high school still has a scientific museum that can be visited.

Here, it is possible to admire various instruments from the Voltaian period, the most curious of which is undoubtedly "il moretto", the statue of a Moor whose head can "explode" by recoiling, thanks to a mixture of inflammable metal and breathable air.
