Volta's square

Dedicating a place to Alessandro Volta?

Of course! The city of Como could not fail to pay homage to a scientist of such great importance. So here is the monument to Volta in the piazza of the same name. Apart from the many people who often enjoy an aperitif at the tables in the square, what can we see? On the three sides of the statue's base are bas-relief medallions depicting Volta's several inventions and discoveries. That's right, you read that correctly, "several". The physicist not only invented the battery but also the capacitor electrometer, the eudiometer and he studied the "inflammable air of the swamps", which we all know today as methane. So it's OK to go to Piazza Volta for an aperitif, but remember to pay homage to the genius of Como too!
